Born 1989, Nathan Gates is an artist living and working in Johannesburg South Africa.
He holds a BFA from The University of Stellenbosch and MA(Cum Laude) from The University of The Witwatersrand, where he has also lectured. He has exhibited work, given workshops and talks both locally and internationally. Most notably: This Speed has Weight at Plataforma Bogotá, Bogotá, Colombia (2018), Everything Is In Perfect Working Order at The IFAN Museum, Sénégal (2018), Our Exquisite Corpse at The Wits Arts Museum as part of the Fak’ugesi Residency Exploring Cultural Technologies for Future Johburg curated by Tegan Bristow (2015), Office Exercise: Towards a more sensible boredom with technology in the office in the Technoetic Arts Journal (2014) and Fingers In The Outlet at ROOM Gallery, Johannesburg (2013). In 2017 he received the inaugural Africa ArtBox award for his ‘Thinking Tool’ proposal, This Speed Has Weight.
